Tips for Buying a Notebook PC

  • Get at least 256 MB of memory. Ideally get 512 MB, Windows XP will run much faster.
  • If possible, test out the keyboard and pointing device. Some keyboards feel tight or require using a function key to page up and down. Some pointing devices are difficult to control. A test drive can help you identify issues before you buy.
  • At a minimum, get the built in CD burner. This is one of the quickest and easiest ways to backup your work.
  • If you plan to save music or video files on your laptop, get at least a 60GB hard drive. These files can quickly eat up disk space.
  • If you travel often, get a second battery. There is nothing more frustrating than running out of power before your work is done.
  • Consider a built-in wireless connection. This capability will make it easier to network without using one of the card slots or USB ports.
  • Seriously consider the extended warrantee. Typically with electronic purchases, the extended warrantees aren't worth while. However, laptop computers seem to be prone to screen, keyboard and motherboard problems. And when something breaks, it requires specialized expertise and custom parts to fix (i.e. it's expensive to fix). We recommend getting the warrantee for as long as you plan to use the computer (or the manufacturer will allow).
